Representatives of the Southern Mongolia Freedom Federation held a press conference from noon until 3:00 PM on April 25,1996 near the site of the United Nations in New York City, alongside of our Tibetan brothers' call for Tibetan independence. The Federation expressed its demands for the release of all imprisoned Mongol intellectuals in Southern Mongolia, and the Southern Mongolians right to self-determination.

During the press conference, Federation Chairman Borjigin Erkhe, with members Oyunbilig and Erdenbat made known their plans to hold a 49-hour fast, in front of the Chinese Consulate in New York City, beginning April 30, 1995, at 12:00 noon (corresponding to 12 AM May 1, 1996, Beijing time) to demand the immediate release of the imprisoned Mongol intellectuals in Southern Mongolia, and to memorialize the murdered victims of the Chinese Communist government, over the past 49 years.

The Southern Mongolia Freedom Federation calls on all Mongols and freedom-loving people from all corners of the world, to join with us at the same time, in front of any Chinese Communist embassy, consulate or other government building, for 49 minutes, or 49 hours, to express revulsion and opposition to the inhumane policies of the Chinese communist government.
