Berkeley May 3, 1996 - In support of the Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, and in solidarity with the Tibetan people and Tibet Support Groups around the world, Bay Area Friends of Tibet and The Tibetan Association of Northern California will host a candlelight vigil at the Chinese Consulate, Laguna at Geary Streets in San Francisco, on Tuesday May 14, from 7-9 pm.
On the 14th of May 1995 the Dalai Lama announced his recognition of the boy, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima as the new Panchen Lama. It was soon after the announcement that the newly recognised Panchen Lama, his family and Chadrel Rinpoche (accused of colluding with the Dalai Lama in his announcement of the Panchen Lama) where placed under detention. The 6 year old boy and his family was last seen in July, 1995.
A Chinese statement "We have no idea of the whereabouts of the soul boy designated by the Dalai Lama" leaves the Tibetan world in fear for the safety of the six year old Panchen Lama. Amnesty International identifies the boy as world's youngest political prisoner.
We ask you to invite as many people as possible to the vigil in San Francisco, and would be grateful for support in your community.
