Dadon Dawadolma is a well-known and loved Tibetan pop singer who has devoted her singing career to promoting Tibetan independence and to spreading the message of his holiness the Dalai Lama through song. After releasing her sixth album in 1992, she fled Tibet, fearing Chinese government reprisals. After meeting with the Dalai Lama in India, she managed to win political asylum in the United States, where she is currently persuing her musical career with one sole objective: to educate the international community about Tibetal culture and the present situation in her homeland. She now lives with her husband Bhumba and her second son, Tenzen Tashi, in Middletown, Connecticut. She has formed a very powerful performing band with graduate students and alumni of the World Music Program at Wesleyan University.
Dadon has recently performed with two of her new band members at a benefit for the Tibet House in New York, held at Carnegie Hall in February of this year. Together with her band, she has been performing in Connecticut and New York at cultural arts centers, colleges, and at Tibetan event.
While she has not been included to perform at the upcoming June 15 & 16 concert in California for Tibetan Independence, she is interested in being included in future events. Her music takes traditional Tibetan melodies and vocal techniques and infuses them with an Asian pop aesthetic and with lyrics that are pro-Tibetan independence and freedom. She is eager to carry out her mission in life, fulfilling the Dalai Lama's expressed words to her that "the best thing she can do for her country is to keep singing."
