The Dalai Lama addressed a meeting of the Danish parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee on human rights in Tibet, the Danish newspaper ` Berlingska Tidende'reported. China declined an invitation to be represented at the session.
The Dalai Lama said was not calling for the recognition of Tibet as an independent state or for sanctions against China. He wanted to find common ground with China, the report said.
The Dalai Lama has been made an honorary citizen of Palermo, Italian TV reported. Interviewed by the station, he said that his main effort was to obtain direct negotiations with the Chinese government. "For this reason, I am calling on the international community to help us to bring China to the negotiating table," he said. He hoped Italy might help in this policy.
