A new Tibetan radio station began broadcasting on 14th May, Voice Of America reported. Broadcasting from Oslo, it is called the Voice of Tibet, and is aimed at listeners in Tibet and Tibetan communities abroad. Tseten Namgyal, the Voice of Tibet's editor-in-chief, interviewed by Voice Of America said that programmes were made in Norway and also in Britain, the United States and Italy. The station broadcasts on metre-band 19, frequency 15.445 MHz (15445 kHz) on Shortwave 2.
Tseten Namgyal said the programme consists of news and a featured story based on human rights and the situation in Tibet. He said that the station had got quite a good response from India, but so far they had had no response from Tibet because of Chinese "repressions" . He said "people may not dare to even tune to our radio broadcasts for some time" .
The station will be "the voice of the voiceless people" of Tibet, " who cannot raise their voice against the Chinese" , he said.
A poorly-received broadcast by Voice of Tibet on 24th May featured news about the latest crackdown in Lhasa, including the closure of Ganden Monastery, and news about the Dalai Lama's visit to Sweden.
