TEXT Bonn (DPA) - The Chinese Government has protested against a resolution on Tibet that the German Bundestag is planning to adopt. Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Erdmann confirmed to DPA today that the German ambassador to Beijing, Konrad Seitz, was summoned to the Chinese Foreign Ministry on 14 May. China demanded that the resolution should be "prevented." Erdmann pointed out that such a resolution is a sovereign decision of the Bundestag.
The news magazine DER SPIEGEL reports in its latest issue that the planned resolution describes Tibet's status under international law as "controversial." Also, it urges the Federal Government to increase its commitment for the observance of human rights in Tibet. By establishing official relations with the People's Republic, Germany has recognized Tibet as being part of China.
