DALAI LAMA MEETS NORWAY'S FOREIGN MINISTER

Published by: World Tibet Network News, Sunday, Jun 2, 1996

OSLO, May 28 (Reuter) - The Dalai Lama, exiled Tibetan leader, met Norwegian Foreign Minister Bjoern Tore Godal on Tuesday to discuss recent developments in the Chinese-ruled region and possible solutions, the foreign ministry said.

But Norway, although successful in recent mediation between parties in the Middle East, said it would not step up pressure on Chinese

"In all our contacts with the Chinese authorities we take up the issues of human rights in China and Tibet. We are not planning any specific initiatives, but we will bring up the issue of Tibet again with the Chinese president."

Chinese President Jiang Zemin is scheduled to visit Norway at the end of June.

The Chinese army marched into Tibetan capital, Lhasa, in 1950 and took control of the mountainous Himalayan region. In 1959 the Dalai Lama, the country's spiritual and temporal leader, fled to India after a bloody, abortive uprising against Chinese rule.

Beijing accuses him of fomenting Tibetan independence and stirring up anti-Chinese sentiment. He now lives in India.
