TIBETAN BUDDHIST MONKS TO CREATE SACRED SAND MANDALA & PRESENT MULTI-MEDIA PROGRAM

Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Sera Je Monastery will bring drama, beauty and history during their upcoming visit to Seattle.

The monks will create a 'Chenrezig' Sand Mandala at the Newmark Center Gallery from July 24 - August 2, 1996. There will be an Opening Ritual Ceremony on Wednesday, July 24 at 12 noon.

The Sand Mandala is a traditional religious painting that is made with colored sand. This particular Sand Mandala brings a message of Peace.

The public is welcome to visit the Newmark Center Gallery for the Opening Ritual Ceremony and daily from 9am - 6pm to view the creation of this unique masterpiece. Donations for the creation of the Sand Mandala are welcome at the site.

On Saturday, August 3, 1996, the 17 monks will present a multi-media program, Wild Life, Tamed Mind: Journey to the Heart of Tibet in Sacred Music and Dance at the Nippon Kan Theatre at 7pm.

Wild Life, Tamed Mind unites the live dance, music and chant of the Sera Je monks, with the narrative flow of multi-media imagery to produce a whole and coherent picture of Tibetan history, culture and religion. The program offers the audience the full flavor of Tibetan life as it continues in refugee communities in India, and as it may someday flower again in a free Tibet. The program will be narrated by a Tibetan Buddhist nun, Ani Thubten Dekyong.

Tickets for the program are $15 advance, $17 at the door. Advance tickets are available at Elliott Bay Book Co. (Pioneer Square), Lhasa Store (U-District), Tenzing Momo (Pike Place Market), The Vajra (Capitol Hill), Mandala Books (Roosevelt), Wide World Books & Maps (Wallingford) and the Tibetan Rights Campaign office. For more information, contact TRC at 547-1015.

The visit of the Sera Je Monks to Seattle is hosted by the Tibetan Rights Campaign which is a non-profit human rights organization.
