LHASA (July 26) XINHUA - Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region has set a target of hitting a yearly business turnover of 121 million yuan by 2000 in posts and telecommunications.
The region has earmarked efforts to promote the development of posts and communications to meet its target.
It means that the sector will have to maintain an annual growth rate of 20 percent in the remaining years of the century.
A local government official said that Tibet will strive to build an efficient postal network during the Ninth Five-Year Plan period (1996-2000).
He said Tibet will also strengthen administration over its 150 post offices, and bring about 27 million yuan in business volume from postal services by the year 2000.
On telecommunications, the official said that the region will step up the development of program-controlled telephone networks.
He added that Tibet plans to greatly enlarge its total telephone capacity to 132,000 telephone lines by the end of the century with nation-wide direct dialing service available in every county.
