Published by World Tibet Network News - Friday, August 23rd 1996BEIJING, Aug 21 (AFP) - Tibet must replace the feudal elements of its culture with socialism, to rid itself of the old traditions and dependence on the "two-faced" Dalai Lama, said a copy of the Tibet Daily received in Beijing Wednesday.
"We will not be able to remove the old and irrelevant ideology and culture until the two-faced Dalai Lama stops duping people into believing these traditions are still important" the paper said.
"We can proceed with this eradication with a clear conscience that this will stop certain antagonists from trying to use the old customs to build up a power base," it added, without elaborating.
The paper denounced "the band of the Dalai Lama" for what it said was its efforts to increase attempts to penetrate and infiltrate Tibet and "deceive" Tibetans.
"If we stop our efforts to stamp out these practices, we give ground to our enemies," it said, and the best way to discredit the Dalai Lama is to strip him of the "religious mask he uses to cheat people," it added.
China annexed Tibet in 1950 and observers have warned that continued immigration to the Himalayan country by ethnic Han Chinese has threatened to overwhelm the native culture of around six million Tibetans.
The Dalai Lama is barred from his native land and images of him are forbidden. He heads a government in exile based at the northern Indian town of Dharamsala, where more than 100,000 Tibetan refugees now live.
