Published by World Tibet Network News - Thursday, August 29 1996MANILA, Aug 28 (AFP) - Two Tibetans who were planning to attend a human rights conference on China, to be held in Manila, were denied entry to the Philippines, the conference organizers said.
Gedun Rinchen and Tampa Tsering, both based in India, were not allowed to enter the country to attend an Amnesty International-sponsored international forum on human rights in China, which is due to begin on Friday.
Mark Ogle, an Amnesty International spokesman for the conference, said that when the two Tibetans applied for visas at the Philippine embassy in India, they were turned down because of concerns about China's reaction.
A letter from the Department of Foreign Affairs to the local Amnesty office said the department could not reconsider the request for a visa. Copies of the letter were issued to the press.
Foreign Affairs spokesmen said they could not comment on the issue.
Ogle would not say whether the two Tibetans belonged to any specific organization although Rinchen was due to deliver a report on "nationalism and human rights in Tibet in the 1990s."
