Published by World Tibet Network News - Thursday, August 29 1996BONN, Aug 29 (AFP) - German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel is confident that the ruffled relations between Bonn and Beijing can be smoothed out when he meets with his Chinese counterpart Qian Qichen in New York next month, according to an interview appearing Friday.
Kinkel is due to meet Qian on September 24 on the sidelines of the United Nations general assembly session, the Handelsblatt business newspaper said.
He was supposed to make a visit to China July 11, but the authorities in Beijing in June postponed the event to underline their annoyance at a German parliamentary resolution strongly critical of Chinese policy towards Tibet.
"I believe that after my talk with Foreign Minister Qian Qichen in New York, ways to smooth my visit can be found and the exchange of visits in general organised in accordance with the interests of both countries and the state of their relations," Kinkel said in the interview.
