Published by World Tibet Network News - Sunday, September 1, 1996BONN (Aug. 30) XINHUA - German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel has reiterated that the German government has always followed a "one China" policy and will stick to it, the business daily Handelsblatt quoted him as saying today.
The federal government does not recognize the self-claimed "Tibetan government-in-exile" or have any contact with it, Kinkel said in an interview with Handelsblatt.
He pointed out that the Chinese government had always supported the unification of the German nation.
Stating that Germany wants to develop good relations in all fields with China, the minister highlighted the importance of economic relations which, he said, had bright prospects.
He noted that Germany has become China's biggest European business partner. The volume of bilateral trade has risen to 26.5 billion German marks (18 billion U.S. dollars) from 2.5 billion German marks (1.7 billion dollars) in 1980, and accounts for more than one third of trade volume between Europe and China.
Germany, which has already invested 1.8 billion German marks (1.2 billion dollars) in China and has contracted investment totaling 4.4 billion German marks (3 billion dollars), will increase its investment in the future, said Kinkel.
