Fifth Women's Global Leadership Institute
"Women's Human Rights: Realizing Our Visions"
June 15 - 28, 1997
Around the world, women from diverse backgrounds and experiences have demanded that governments adopt policies which concretely promote and protect women's human rights. These voices represent a vision in which feminist perspectives are key to global policy making and where opportunities for participation are multiplied. Creating a women's human rights vision of a transformed world - and reaching toward this goal - requires women's leadership that is accountable, democratic and inclusive.
Women feel empowered by the acknowledgement of our human rights made at the World Conferences by governments and the United Nations, and this Institute will explore mechanisms through which policies can actually be changed and violators held accountable to realize those rights. Women must take leadership to increase awareness of the promises made by governments and to create ways to utilize this framework in our communities in areas key to advancing women's human rights: violence against women and reproductive & sexual rights.
This year's Women's Global Leadership Institute, "Women's Human Rights: Realizing Our Visions", June 15 - 28, 1997, will bring together leaders who have been working on issues of women's human rights including local and national organizers, public officials, policy makers, researchers, and activists working on varying aspects of the topic. We welcome women from all regions of the world who have taken leadership in various fields to make the abuse of female human rights visible and unacceptable.
The Women's Global Leadership Institute will be a two-week intensive working session of approximately 20 women representing diverse regions, cultures, and interests. Participants will spend time sharing their experiences and developing feminist strategies on the theme. They will work on cross-cultural collaboration and plans for influencing how the international community approaches these issues. They will also learn and exchange leadership skills and organizing techniques. In addition, participants will meet with resource people from the U.N., non-governmental organizations, and foundations in the USA.
Participants are expected to stay for the entire two week period. They should bring materials, resources, and documents from their region. They should have worked on these issues or related concerns for at least two years in either professional or volunteer capacities. Applicants should have clear plans to take the skills and contacts gained at the Institute back to their own projects, governments or regions. Since much of the work is informal and we do not have funds for extensive interpretation, the sessions will be conducted in English.
The Center hopes to raise money to cover travel and expenses of participants. However, where possible, it is hoped that they will have some local support for incidentals.
