FLEETING TIBETANS ARRESTED (UPI)
Published by World Tibet Network News - Wednesday, November 20, 1996

KATMANDU, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Some 105 Tibetans, at least 10 suffering from severe frostbite, were arrested for illegal entry in West Nepal after fleeing their homeland, the daily newspaper Samacharpatra reported Sunday.

"The flight of the Tibetans from Nepal will continue if they are treated leniently," said Gajendra Ram Bhattarai, chief district administrator of Manang.

The refugees entered Nepal from Manang about 360 kms (224 miles) northwest of the Nepali capital. They were members of the eighth group to travel the little-used route via Manang. Most Tibetans use an eastward route along a mountain pass near Mt. Everest.

The Tibetans have been sent to the Nepali capital where police will deliver them to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees which eventually processes their travel to India where their leader the dalai lama lives in exile.

Police have returned some refugees home to the protests of Western governments.
