International Conference on
"The Economies of Greater China: Growth, Opportunities and Risks" 7-8 July 1997, Perth, Australia
Organised by the Department of Economics, The University of Western Australia (UWA) and Chinese Economic Studies Association of Australia (CESAA)
Aims of the Conference:
This will be the ninth annual meeting of the Chinese Economic Studies Association of Australia (CESAA). The theme of the conference is The Economies of Greater China: Growth, Opportunities and Risks. The aim of the meeting is to bring together economists from academia, government and the private sector to promote stimulating discussion on the major issues of relevance to the economies of mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The conference also provides opportunities for Ph.D students to present their work.
Invited Speakers and Panel Sessions:
Invited speakers include distinguished academics and policy makers from North America, Europe and the 'Greater China' regions. Contributed papers will be presented in concurrent sessions. In addition, there will be special sessions on Chinese business, the steel industry in China and East Asia, political economy, and for postgraduate students.
Funding:
Funding of air fares and accommodation is available for a limited number of scholars from the People's Republic of China and Ph.D students presenting a paper at the conference. Early application is essential.
Topics:
The conference organisers invite expressions of interest from people who wish to present papers on the following topics.
* Economic development in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong
Kong
* Productivity and sustainable growth
* Economic integration and its consequences
* The steel industry in China and East Asia
* The Australia-Greater China economic relationship
* Greater China and the Asia Pacific economy
* The political economy of Greater China
Submission of Papers:
An abstract of about 150-250 words should be submitted by February 15, 1997. Authors will be notified of the acceptance of their paper by March 15, 1997. Completed manuscripts should be submitted by May 15, 1997. The conference organisers intend to publish the papers in one or two volumes.

Registration Fee:
The registration fee is A$195 for ordinary registration and A$100 for full-time students. These fees cover the cost of conference materials, lunches, morning and afternoon teas, and the conference dinner.
