"China appreciates the position of India that Tibet is an autonomous part of China and that New Delhi does not allow the Dalai Lama to carry out anti-Chinese activities from here," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Shen Guofeng said.
President Jiang Zemin of China briefed Indian Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda on China's efforts to "build up the Tibet region," he said.
The Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, Thursday urged Chinese President Jiang Zemin, here for a three-day visit, to stop Chinese repression in Tibet.
"The present Chinese policy is resulting in a kind of cultural genocide in Tibet," he said.
Thousands of Tibetans in New Delhi and Dharamsala, where the Dalai Lama is based, protested against Jiang's visit on Thursday and Friday.
The Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetans fled to India after Beijing crushed an anti-Chinese uprising in 1959 in Tibet.
