Published by World Tibet Network News - Thursday, December 12, 1996World Council Meeting of the International Union of Socialist Youth Held in Kathmandu passed resolution on Tibet (6-8 December).
International Union of the Socialist Youth (IUSY) is the representative body of the Socialist Youth organizations in ninety countries with a total membership of over 120 youth organizations.
Tibetan Youth Congress(TYC) is a consultative member of the IUSY and has been playing a very active role within the IUSY platforms.
This summer TYC has participated in the IUSY Festival in Bonn with extensive displays of different aspect of the Tibet and Tibetan. Our exhibition there includes display of traditional Tibetan tent, photo exhibition, video shows and lecture programs on Tibet. This festival was attended by over 5,000 youths from 117 different countries.
Similarly in Kathmandu, preceding the IUSY world council meeting, the Asia Pacific Committee of the IUSY was held (2-4 December) and inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Nepal. During the inaugural session of the meeting the Secretary General of IUSY Alfredo Lozeretto has clearly said, "IUSY supports the independence movement of the Tibetan people". At the end of the Asia Pacific committee meeting a press conference was organised to highlight the issues discussed and the resolutions passed. Ninety percent of the questions from the press personals were on Tibet. It is a different matter that the press hardly carried the messages due to the coincidence of the visit of the Chinese President to Nepal. Infact there were pressure from the government that IUSY meetings should refrain from passing resolutions on Tibet due to the visit.
Tseten Norbu, President of Tibetan Youth Congress has represented (TYC) on both occasions and s poke about the issues of Tibet extensively. As result the Resolution on Tibet was passed with little amendments during the World Council Meeting ( resolution copy enclosed ). A similar resolution was also passed in the Asia Pacific Committee of the IUSY RESOLUTION ON TIBET.
