BEIJING DENOUNCES "COLLUSION" BETWEEN DALAI LAMA AND TAIWAN (AFP)
Published by World Tibet Network News - Friday, February 28, 1997

BEIJING, Feb 28 (AFP) - China Friday denounced "collusion" between Taiwan and the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who was invited to visit the nationalist island at the end of March.

"This constitutes evident proof of collusion between the Taiwanese authorities and the clique of the Dalai Lama, who are uniting their forces more and more openly to divide China," state radio said.

"Taiwan and Tibet are inseparable parts of China," the radio said, quoting a spokesman for China's Taiwanese Affairs Commission.

Beijing regards Taiwan as a renegade province, while the Dalai Lama fled Tibet after an abortive anti-Chinese revolt in 1959.

The radio comments were the strongest criticism yet of the Dalai Lama's six day visit to Taiwan beginning March 22 at the invitation of a Buddhist organization. Until now, Chinese authorities have only warned Taiwanese authorities to beware of the Dalai Lama's "true intentions."

"The Dalai Lama is not a religious leader but a political figure leading foreign separatist activities," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Tang Guoqiang said Thursday.

"Whatever the pretexts which are invoked, this visit would not be favourable to relations" between the two sides, he said.
