Presented by Students for a Free Tibet Sunday, March 9th at Fez
Students for a Free Tibet presents a Benefit for Tibetan Freedom on Sunday, March 9th at Fez, 280 Lafayette Street in New York City. Doors open at 7pm and admission is $10.00. Performers include RealWorld recording artist Yungchen Lhamo, whose recent performance at the Tibet House benefit concert at Carnegie Hall garnered praise from the New York Times and the New York Daily News. Other performers include New York's the Dharma Bums and the Rosenbergs, and special surprise guests. Proceeds will benefit Students for a Free Tibet.
The concert precedes commemorative events scheduled for March 10th, also known as Tibetan National Uprising Day. This day is significant as it marks the anniversary of the 1959 demonstrations against the occupation of Tibet by the Chinese government in which thousands of demonstrators were imprisoned, tortured, and often killed. Since then, an estimated 1.2 million Tibetans have died as a direct result of the oppressive policies of the occupying Chinese government.
Students for a Free Tibet is a non-profit organizations with chapters in over 250 colleges, universities, and high schools throughout North America and increasingly overseas. Since last year's Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco, which featured such bands as the Beastie Boys, the Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, Fugees and Rage Against the Machine, membership in Students for a Free Tibet has increased tri-fold.
