MONTREAL, March 6, 1997, (Montreal Mirror) -- Resistance to the Chinese occupation of Tibet will be honoured this week. In March 1959, thousands of Tibetans flooded into the capital, Lhasa, to protest the colonizing practices of the Chinese. The Chinese attacked and the ensuing revolt was quickly crushed. "For Tibetans, March 10th represents the day they lost Tibet, because it is the day Dalai Lama fled the country," says Carole Samdup, a member of the Canada Tibet Committee.
A Commemoration of the Tibetan Uprising of '59 will be held on March 10 in Ottawa. A rally on Parliament Hill will be followed by a march to the Chinese Embassy. The Canada Tibet Committee is providing free transportation to and from Ottawa. Buses leave Longueuil at 9:30 a.m. and the corner of Decarie and Queen Mary at 10:00 a.m. For more info: 487-0665.
