Published by World Tibet Network New - Thursday, April 3, 1997OSLO, April 2 (AFP) - Qiao Shi, the president of the Chinese parliament, was the target of some hundred pro-human rights demonstrators here on Wednesday at the start of a four-day visit to Norway.
The demonstrators gathered outside the parliament building when Qiao, head of the National People's Congress arrived for talks with the speaker in the Norwegian parliament, Kirsti Kolle Groendahl.
Members of human rights groups Amnesty International, the Helsinki Watch Group and the Tibet Committee joined the protest, shouting slogans including "Human rights in China Now".
Amnesty's chief in Norway Jan Borgen told reporters: "The political regime in China is one of the most authoritarian and brutal regimes in the world."
Qiao will meet Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjoern Jagland and the minister of trade and industry, Grete Knudsen, on Thursday.
The Chinese delegation also includes deputy foreign minister Wu Tao and several leading members of the Chinese parliament.
The Chinese delegation will also visit Bergen on the west coast of Norway, before leaving for Beijing.
Borgen told reporters the worst human rights situation in China was in "Tibet, but injustice is also reported in other provinces like the Moslem Xinjiang province."
He added that Amnesty has asked Norwegian politicians to deal with the documented reports of violations of human rights during talks with the Chinese officials.
