From May 23 to June 11, 1997, His Holiness the Dalai Lama will visit the United States. During the visit, which is religious and academic in nature, His Holiness will be in the New York area, Colorado, and northern and southern California. His Holiness will attend conferences and interfaith events, and will give several public talks. His Holiness will also give Buddhist teachings at several venues, including teachings to the Chinese Buddhist community in Carmel, New York.
New York State
On May 24, His Holiness will join other world Buddhist leaders and the Governor of New York, for the grand opening ceremony of the Great Buddha Hall at Chuang-Yen Monastery, in Carmel, upstate New York. His Holiness will also give a public three day Buddhist teaching at Chuang-Yen Monastery, from May 25 to 27. Call (914) 225-6117.

Colorado
On May 31 and June 1, His Holiness will attend the first nationwide PeaceJam Youth Conference, in Denver, Colorado. The PeaceJam Foundation joins high school and college students with Nobel Peace Prize Laureates for workshops, discussions, and service projects.
While in Colorado, His Holiness will address a Spirituality in Education Conference, at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, and receive honorary degrees from Regis University and the University of Colorado. Santa Barbara
On Monday, June 2, His Holiness will visit UC Santa Barbara, to give the inaugural lecture for the "XIV Dalai Lama Endowment" for Tibetan Buddhism & Cultural Studies. On June 5-7, the Thubten Dhargye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Center is sponsoring teachings by His Holiness on Nagarjuna's "Precious Garland," in which morality, generosity, and truth are the foundation of a just and compassionate society. On June 6, His Holiness will give a Public Talk titled "A Vision for the New Millennium". On June 8, His Holiness will deliver the Shakyamuni Buddha initiation. San Francisco
His Holiness will participate in the "Peacemaking: the Power of Nonviolence" conference, organized by Tibet House NY in association with CIIS, from June 9 to 11 in San Francisco. The conference brings together His Holiness, fellow Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Rigoberta Menchu of Guatemala and Jose Ramos-Horta of East Timor, social advocates, inner city youth, and artists deeply concerned with the current epidemic of violence in our society and the world.
