Published by World Tibet Network News - Monday - April 21, 1997BEIJING, April 21 (AFP) - China published Monday the latest in a series of lengthy commentaries attacking the Dalai Lama, accusing him of instigating repeated anti-Chinese riots in Tibet.
The official Xinhua news agency commentary cited historical evidence that it said completely repudiated the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader's claims to be a man of peace.
The recent spate of written Chinese attacks comes as the Dalai Lama has once again stepped up his travels abroad.
The Dalai Lama was scheduled to arrive in the United States later Monday for a four-day visit, during which the White House said he might meet with President Bill Clinton.
Since fleeing Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule, the Dalai Lama "has gone farther and farther down the road of dividing the motherland," Xinhua said, accusing him of organising forces to "harass the Chinese border militarily" during the 1960s.
The agency went on to say that remarks by the Dalai Lama calling for Tibetan independence had been the spark for violent anti-Chinese riots in the Tibetan capital Lhasa in September 1987.
"The facts show that the Dalai Lama is not the 'apologist of peace' as he pretends to be, but is the fomenter of repeated chaos in Tibet under the banner of Tibetan independence," it said.
Much of the commentary was devoted to pointing out improvements in living standards in Tibet since the Dalai Lama fled into exile, such as increased life expectancy and better education.
Xinhua said the Dalai Lama, far from contributing to these improvements, had instead striven to incite anti-Chinese hatred in Tibet which, it added, could only serve to impede the region's economic development.
"How dare he call this 'bringing happiness to the Tibetan people'"? it said.
"The Dalai Lama's political conspiracy to stir up social riots in Tibet is doomed to a complete failure," it added.
