[CND, 05/07/97] A series of official surveys of workers' opinions,
conducted by the Chinese Communist Party secretariat and the All-China
Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU) between 1982 and 1996, indicate a sharp
fall in the number who believe in the Communist Party and trust in the
future of socialism. While losing their confidence in the Party, more and
more are turning to religion. A Reuters report cites a 1982 survey as
showing that the top ideal among workers was to realize communism, while
ensuring a better life for their family came fifth. In 1996, some 53.09%
believed China could continue along the socialist road but it would be a
very difficult task to carry out, while in 1991 73.16% held the same
opinion. (Bo XIONG, YIN De An)
