THE DALAI LAMA SPEAKS IN NEW YORK CITY ON HARMONY IN DIVERSITY AND

JOINS NOBEL LAUREATES TO SIGN DECLARATION ON ENDING DEADLY ARMS TRADE

[New York City] -- On May 29, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama of

Tibet will join The Very Rev. Dr. Harry H. Pritchett, Jr. Dean of the

Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New

York City in a talk at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine at

7:00pm. The Dalai Lama will be addressing an audience of 4,000

speaking on Harmony in Diversity. This event will also be broadcast

live via satellite throughout North America.

The satellite test signal begins at 6:30pm EST and the program at

7:00pm EST, running time approximately one hour. For more

information on participating in the satellite broadcast, contact

Global Gatherings at 505-982-2060. The satellite coordinates are:

At 5:00pm, prior to the public talk, the Dalai Lama will join former

President of Costa Rica Dr. Oscar Arias, in an international press

conference, to mark the historic signing of a Nobel laureates'

International Code of Conduct on Arms Transfers endorsed by over a

dozen Nobel Peace laureates around the world. Also taking part in

the signing ceremony will be fellow laureates Elie Wiesel, Jose

Ramos-Horta, Betty Williams, and representatives of the American

Friends Service Committee, and Amnesty International. The ceremony

will take place before an audience of over 500 distinguished leaders

and members of the press. The Commission of Nobel Peace laureates,

established by Dr. Arias in 1995, has drawn up a model International

Code of Conduct on Arms Transfers which would serve as the basis of

an international agreement outlining strict criteria to govern global

arms transfers.

Immediately following the press conference, leaders of Students for a

Free Tibet will be addressing the laureates and audience. Over 60

Students for a Free Tibet chapters will be in attendance at this

special event.

From Westchester: Go down Henry Hudson Parkway to 96th Street

Ramp. On 96th St., go across three avenues

(West End, Broadway and Amsterdam). On

Amsterdam, turn left and travel up to 112th St.

From Long Island: Take the Throgs Neck Bridge to Cross Bronx

Expressway. Approaching the George Washington

Bridge, keep right to Henry Hudson Parkway South.

Go to the 96th Street Ramp. On 96th Street go

across three avenues (West End, Broadway and

Amsterdam). On Amsterdam, turn left and

travel up to 112th St.

Or From Long Island: Midtown Tunnel to 34th Street, Cross 34th Street to

10th Avenue. Go right on 19th Ave. to 112th St.

(10th Avenue becomes Amsterdam at 72nd St.).

From New Jersey: Holland or Lincoln Tunnel to Henry Hudson Parkway

(also called West Side Highway). Go uptown (North)

to 96th Street. On 96th Street, go across three avenues

(West End, Broadway, and Amsterdam). On

Amsterdam, turn left and travel up to 112th St.

There is a parking garage on 114th Street and Amsterdam Avenue.
