STOCKHOLM, June 14 (AFP) - Some 80 peace researchers from around the world, including the Dalai Lama, gathered in Stockholm on Saturday for a seminar on how to promote peace and prevent genocide, organisers said.
_We are talking about what solutions civilised countries should have in case of situations which can trigger an explosion in societies where there is a risk of genocide, as in Rwanda," said Claes Cronstedt.
Cronstedt is the chairman of the Swedish chapter of The Friends of Raoul Wallenberg, which organised the seminar.
The Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader who spoke under the theme _A century of peace, hope and justice", singled out Africa as the continent that needs the most attention.
_It is a continent with many possibilities but they need help. Both in terms of aid and money, but also in terms of self-confidence," he said, highlighting the importance of international organisations and stressing the need to bridge the gap between rich and poor countries.
The Dalai Lama also spoke of humanity, demilitarisation, compromise, and global understanding as a means to a more peaceful world.
_To get there, we must underline the importance of humanity and work against the destructive forces," he said.
