London: 14th June 1997 sees the release of 'Long Live Tibet' - an album compiled in order to raise awareness of Tibetan Culture and it's erosion at the hands of the Communist Chinese, and to aid the ever growing number of Tibetan refugees around the world, particularly with regards to health and education. The 16 track album is comprised of rare and previously unreleased tracks, live versions and songs specifically recorded for this project. The album is released on CD , cassette and double vinyl on EMI Records. Artist royalties will go to Tibet House Trust, a registered charity recognized by The Dalai Lama.
Pre-1950, Tibet was an independent country in control of it's own affairs. In 1949 Chinese troops entered the country to carry out 'peaceful negotiations', and in the following year 35,000 Chinese troops brutally crushed the small Tibetan Army and occupied the country. The Dalai Lama - Tibets spiritual leader (who was 16 years old at the time) tried unsuccessfully to negotiate with the Chinese, but was forced into exile in 1959 after a popular uprising of Tibetans was suppressed with the loss of 87,000 lives.
Over a million Tibetans, one fifth of the population, have died as a direct result of Chinese rule, and over six thousand of the countries monasteries and temples have been destroyed. There has been massive environmental destruction of the country, and the de-forestation of the Tibetan plateau now even affects the Indian Monsoon.
International awareness of the situation in Tibet is growing. Last Year Smashing Pumpkins, Fugees and Beck (among others) played a concert in San Francisco in support of Tibetan human rights. This June, over 100,000 people are expected at an even bigger 2 day show - the Tibet Freedom Concert at Randell Island, NYC featuring Beastie Boys, Foo Fighters, Patti Smith, Sonic Youth, Bjork, Blur, Michael Stipe & Mike Mills, Radiohead, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Alanis Morissette and many, many more.
This album is dedicated to the Tibetan people in their efforts to preserve Tibet's distinct culture and religious heritage.
