Atlantic Records is interested in getting the word out about a new Erato recording by the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA), Dhama Suna, which is scheduled for an early September release. This collection of both traditional Tibetan folk and classical music was recorded using 20-bit digital technology at the legendary [George] Lucas Skywalker Studios in San Francisco, and offers a varied selection of both vocal and instrumental pieces by this renowned group of artists.
However, the CD is perhaps most distinctive as the first authentic, state-of-the-art recording of Tibetan folk music. In fact, both TIPA and Dhama Suna have been publicly endorsed by the Dalai Lama, who contributes a message to the album's liner notes.
This recording's release is timely, with recent interest in Tibet heightened both through the Tibetan Freedom concerts on the West and East coasts, and through the concurrent autumn release of the Martin Scorsese/Disney film on the Dalai Lama. Additionally, a film entitled Seven Days in Tibet, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and starring Brad Pitt, is scheduled to hit theaters in 1998. Certainly the arts have made and are making great strides in increasing awareness of Tibetan issues.
Atlantic would love to gain access to Tibet support groups' mailing lists, or to arrange coverage in newsletters, in order to reach the people who would be truly interested in a project such as this. Any inquiries or responses can be directed to the Atlantic marketing department, via e mail to the above address or at (212) 707-2917.
