JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Program Coordinator, Tibet Fund

Supervisor: Director, Tibet Fund

Location: New York City, NY

Date available: August 1, 1997

The Tibet Fund is a non-profit organization that administers projects in health, education, and community development both inside Tibet and in the refugee communities of India and Nepal. We are seeking a college graduate to fill the staff position of Program Coordinator, which will be vacant beginning September 1.

DUTIES:

Primary responsibility is to coordinate the Tibetan Scholarship Program, the Fulbright-funded program that sponsors Tibetan students' graduate school education in the U.S. Each year, 15 Tibetan students from India and Nepal participate in this program. Effective coordination entails:

* Researching graduate programs at American universities to find several suitable potential placements for each student

* Collecting transcripts, essays, standardized test scores, etc. from the students; assembling and submitting over 80 graduate school applications annually

* Negotiating with university admissions and department chairs regarding admission and funding

* Coordinating room/board and transportation details

* Coordinating student orientation weekend annually in August

* Providing support to enrolled students throughout the year

Additionally, the Program Coordinator is involved in all aspects of the other work of Tibet Fund, including:

* Writing grant proposals and reports

* Working closely with the Office of Tibet on special projects

* Processing donations and preparing quarterly reports to offices in India and Nepal

* Assisting the President and Director as needed

REQUIREMENTS: undergraduate degree; strong written and verbal communication skills; experience in word processing, database management, and internet; highly refined organizing skills
