TIBETAN INSTITUTE OF PERFORMING ARTS (TIPA) COMES TO MADISONPublished by World Tibet Network News - Tuesday, July 29, 1997
For the first time in nearly a decade, TIPA, a talented dance and drama group from the Tibetan refugee community in Dharamsala India, will return to Madison for two performances at the Barrymore Theatre on September 11 and 12. Madison is one of only three cities in the United States which TIPA will visit during their 1997 international tour.
Founded in 1959, TIPA has functioned both as a source of entertainment for Tibetans in refugee camps in India as well as an institute to help preserve Tibetan culture. This marvelous dance troupe now tours the globe exposing people to the rich cultural heritage of Tibet. Audiences of all ages are enthralled by lively traditional step dances, sacred chanting and Tibetan opera.
The Wisconsin Tibetan Association (WTA) is sponsoring TIPA's journey to Madison. Besides offering first-rate entertainment, it is hoped that TIPA's presence will increase awareness and understanding of Tibetan culture. Short performances and demonstrations in Madison schools and neighboring communities are also scheduled.
