YUNGCHEN LHAMO TO APPEAR AT THE LILITH FAIR
Published by World Tibet Network News - Thursday, July 31, 1997

Award winning Tibetan singer Yungchen Lhamo has just returned from London where she performed to critical acclaim at the Royal Festival Hall as part of Laurie Anderson's Meltdown Festival. The gala performance on July 5 also featured along with Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, Ryuichi Sakamoto and Bill T Jones who danced in collaboration with Yungchen Lhamo.

The London paper The Independent wrote, "With a twinkle of tiara and a river of black hair cascading to her knees, young Tibetan devotional singer Yungchen Lhamo made a powerful start to the show. Her pure unaccompanied voice swooping to meet her trail outstretched hands in songs of spellbinding mournfulness" as she sang of the suffering of the people in Tibet.

The LILITH FAIR is sweeping across America as this years most successful music tour featuring the cream of American women musicians. Yungchen Lhamo has been invited to perform at four concerts in August in Chicago, Colombus, Pittsbugh and Scranton PA (see lilithfair.com for details). Also appearing amongst others are Jewel, Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Indigo Girls and Shawnolvin.

Yungchen Lhamo's appearance at the Lilith Fair not only reaffirms her reputation as a world class performer but also promotes Tibet through the professionalism and talent of the Tibetan people themselves. Showing what a woman from a unique culture can do given freedom and opportunity.

Yungchen Lhamo's album, TIBET, TIBET is available on Real World Records in the world music section of all good music stores.
