In News Jersey, the Princeton Area Friends of Tibet kicked off our "7 Days for Tibet" on Sunday, Oct. 5 with an "Interfaith Prayer Service for Tibet" in Princeton Borough.
Key speakers were Sonam Wangdu la from New York, Rev. Robert Moore of Princeton's Coalition for Peace Action and Rabbi James Diamond of Princeton University's Center for Jewish Life. Also present were reps of the mayors (we have two mayors, one each for Princeton Borough and Princeton Township) and Mr. Carl Mayer. Both mayors sent beautifully bound proclamations which read:

PROCLAMATION
Whereas, the United States Congress has reenacted legislation declaring Tibet an occupied country whose true representatives are the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in exile; and
Whereas, the United Nations Human Rights Subcommission has passed a resolution concerning the present threat to the cultural, religious and national identify of the Tibetan people; and
Whereas, organizations and individuals throughout the United States, and from around the World, are requesting protection of Tibet's distinct religious and cultural heritage and improvement of human rights in China and Tibet; and
Whereas, the Princeton Area Friends of Tibet will be conducting activities during the week of October 5 through 11 to promote awareness about Tibet and concern for the Tibetan people:
Now, therefor, I, Marvin R. Reed, Mayor of the Borough of Princeton, New Jersey do hereby proclaim the week of October 5 - 11, 1997 as TIBETAN AWARENESS WEEK in the Borough of Princeton and urge all residents to reaffirm our support of democratic ideals, including in Tibet, and guaranteeing the liberties of each individual throughout the world.

The Proclamation from Princeton Township is identical except that it is signed by Township Mayor, Michelle Tuck Ponder.
Other events are: At Princeton University - in conjunction with the PU Students for Free Tibet a slide/talk by Peter Gold on Tuesday and in conjunction with Amnesty International film on Ngawang Choephel and talk by Tsewang Namgyala of SFT on Thursday, candlelight vigil in Philadelphia (outside two TV stations on Wednesday, i.e. if .. doesn't come to the mountain, the mountain will go to ..), movie (guess which movie?) and reception on Friday to end with "Walk 7 Miles for Tibet" in Philadelphia ending at the Liberty Bell on Saturday.
