150 Communities and 40 States Launch Nationwide Awareness and Action Campaign

Thursday, October 9

Yestaerday, over 150 communities in 40 states launched Seven Days for Tibet, the most widespread Tibet awareness campaign since the 1991 "Year of Tibet."

Groups kicked off the week with candlelight vigils in 10 cities and with a national press conference in New York city. Seven Days for Tibet has already received widespread media coverage, including in Newsweek, US News & World Report, and many local publications.

300,000 Action Kits are being distributed to thousands of volunteers across the country to be handed out at theaters showing Seven years in Tibet. Groups participaing in the campaign include not only Tibet support groups and Tibetan refugees associations, but also environmental groups, high school groups, and other activist groups around the country.

Listed below are the groups and individuals organizing events for Seven Days for Tibet. If your group is planning events or leafleting for Seven Days for Tibet and are not listed here, please e-mail ICT at ict@igc.apc.org.

HILO TO PARTICIPATE IN SEVEN DAYS FOR TIBET ACTION

The Big Island International Campaign for Tibet committee will have an information booth this Saturday at the Mamo Street Circus Tent Market as part of the national SEVEN DAYS FOR TIBET educational campaign. The campaign coincides with Friday's release of the internationally acclaimed film, "Seven Years In Tibet" -- the true life saga of an Austrian mountaineer who, during World War II, escaped from a British POW camp in India, climbed over the Himalyas to Tibet and befriended the young Dalai Lama.

Since 1950 when Communist Chinese armed forces invaded Tibet, over 6,000 monasteries in Tibet and their contents -- irreplaceable jewels of Tibetan culture -- have been destroyed, and more than a million Tibetans have died from torture, starvation and execution.

Tibetans are routinely imprisoned and tortured by communist Chinese for non-violently expressing their views. Nuns are brutally raped in communist prisons. Freedom of religion is severely curtailed.

The Big Island International Campaign for Tibet committee will be at the Mamo Street Circus Tent Market this Saturday to talk story and suggest concrete, non-violent ways you can kokua the people of Tibet.

We look forward to seeing you. Mahalo.
