Joint Statement. Sino-Tibetan dialogue: finding common grounds

Published by: World Tibet Network News Monday - October 15, 1997

Joint Statement - Sino-Tibetan dialogue: finding common grounds 11-12, October 1997, London

1. The participants of the Sino-Tibetan Dialogue in London commend the Tibetan Community of Europe and the Alliance for a Democratic China, U.K. for organising this important interaction between the Tibetans in exile and the Chinese who support democracy.

2. This conference on Sino-Tibetan Dialogue is a significant opportunity of interaction between the Tibetans in exile and Chinese who support democracy. A peaceful dialogue is one and the only means to seek our common interests. Both parties will support each other and work together for our future dialogue with Chinese authorities, which we hope will lead to a negotiated settlement.

3. The two parties will support each other in exposing at all forums the Chinese government's disregard for human rights and environmental protection of Chinese, Tibetans and other ethnic groups.

4. The two sides call upon the Chinese government to negotiate the future status of Tibet based on His Holiness the Dalai Lama's middle way approach as manifested in his several initiatives such as the Five-Point Peace Plan and his Strasbourg proposal and a federalist system approach as advocated by the Alliance for a Democratic China as reflected in its Federated China Constitution.

5. A 11Sino-Tibetan Joint working Committee" is to be set up to promote works for both interests. Members of the working committee shall be assigned by
