China: Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright designated Mr. Gregory B. Craig as Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. This responsibility will be in addition to his continuing role as Director of Policy Planning.

Consistent with our overall objective of promoting the protection of human rights in China, as the Department's Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues Mr. Craig's focus will be to advance this objective in Tibet and to preserve the unique religious, cultural, and linguistic heritage of Tibetans. A central objective will also be to promote substantive dialogue between the Chinese government and the Dalai Lama or his representatives.
