Quake measuring 5.5 hits China's Kunlun mountains

Published by: World Tibet Network News Friday, November 14, 1997

BEIJING, Nov 14 (AFP) - An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter Scale shook the Kunlun Mountains that straddle Tibet and Xinjiang early Friday, the State Seismological Bureau said, but no injuries were reported.

"We have already received a telephone call from Nima county where the quake struck and they said there were no injuries or damage," said an official from the Tibetan Seismological Bureau.

The quake struck at 6:35 a.m. (22:35 GMT Thursday) and its epicentre was 36.7 degrees north latitude and 86.6 degrees east longitude.

"This quake was an aftershock of the 7.5 quake that hit this area on November 8," the official said.

An aftershock measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit late Thursday in the northwestern tip of the Kokoshili Mountains near the Kunlun Mountains.

The November 8 quake was large enough to be registered immediately by seismic monitors worldwide, but caused little damage due to its remote location.
