Resolution calls Chinese Policies in Tibet Genocidal
Geneva, 20 November - On 12 November, the Geneva City Council adopted resolution (R-543) on Tibet by consensus to express its deep on the denial of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Tibet. In particular, the resolution raised the issues of Chinese population transfer in Tibet; the incommunicado detention of Panchen Rinpoche, saying that Chinese policies in Tibet constituted linguistic, religious and cultural genocide.
The resolution adopted by the 100-member Geneva City Council also made two important demands to the both the Parliament (Grand Conseil) the Government (Conseil d'Etat) of the Geneva State: The demands were:
1. To officially receive His Holiness the Dalai Lama or representatives of the Government of Tibet in Exile, during their next visit to the city.
2. To recommend to State and Federal authorities to give diplomatic status to representative of the Government of Tibet in Exile in Geneva (Tibet Bureau).
The resolution was moved by Mr. Regis de Baffista, Ms Caroline Dalleves Romaneschi and Mr. Pierre Rumo, representing three different political parties.
