Reports of Tibetan protests in New Delhi

Tibetan Youth Congress organised a protest demonstration during the visit of High level Chinese delegation to New Delhi.

Earlier in the morning Tibetan Youth Hostel was heavily cordoned by the Delhi police fearing that the students will hold demonstration. But few of the students manage to slip off the cordone.

The following news appeared in Asian Age dated 15th December 1997.

14 TIBETANS ARRESTED AT IGI AIRPORT

New Delhi, Dec, 14 : The police arrested 14 Tibetan protesting outside the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday evening, reports our correspondent. The group was lying in wait for a Chinese delegation that was scheduled to arrive on Sunday evening. The group included five women and nine men.

The group of Tibetans was protesting against the harassment that their fellow Tibetans back home are suffering under the Chinese rule. They were arrested before the delegation arrived and were being held at the Delhi Cantonment police station.

Another incident which the press didn't cover was at the Taj Palace Hotel, N.Delhi. A group of 20 students were hiding in bushes near at the Hotel waiting for the Chinese delegation to arrive. They made a surprise welcome to the Chinese delegation by blocking their car and raised slogans " Free Tibet " " We want freedom " "Chinese Quit Tibet" and likewise. Later they were arrested and being held in Chanakyapuri police station, New Delhi.

ANOTHER 46 TIBETANS ARRESTED

N.Delhi, 15th Dec : Another 46 Tibetan youths including former member of parliament Namkha Tenzin are arrested today in connection with the protest demonstration against the visiting Chinese delegation. They were protesting at the Chinese Embassy while the delegates are having their luncheon meeting. They hold the protest demonstration for about fifteen minutes at the gate of the embassy until they were arrested by the local police.

They manage to make the Tibetans voice heard. The police survelence is increased in a large proportion in the entire city.

Every mongoloid featured people are arrested on sight.
