Geneva, 13 February - Bernex, one of the 43 municipalities under the city of Geneva has decided to name one its smaller parks, "Parc du Tibet", to honour the people of Tibet, their nation and their cause. Bernex municipality has 9,000 inhabitants which includes one Tibetan. In previous years, this municipality has supported the causes of Yanomani Indians and people of Cambodia.
Tomorrow evening during an inauguration ceremony in the presence of Mrs. Chungdak Koren, Representative of H. H. the Dalai Lama in Geneva, Mr. Alain-Dominique Mauris, the Mayor of Bernex, will officially declare the park as the "Park of Tibet." The Tibetan Community in Switzerland-French speaking chapter and Comite du Soutien au Peuple Tibetan-Switzerland have been working with the Mayor of Bernex for several years to realise the above honour for Tibet.
Mrs. Chungdak Koren will present a silver Tibetan Butter Lamp to Mayor Mauris to thank the people of Bernex. A note attached with the butter lamp reads: "Presented to the people of Bernex with respect and gratitude by the Government of Tibet in Exile on behalf of the six million people of Tibet."
This is the second time a municipality in Geneva has expressed its support to the Tibetan cause through such gestures. In 1997, Veyrier municipality named one of its streets, "Place du Tibet" to commemorate the 38th Anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day.
