OFFICE OF TIBET - PARIS March 5, 1998
On Sunday, March 8, 1998, Tibetans and Tibet supporters in Europe will be in
Paris to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the Tibetan People's National
Uprising in Lhasa on March 10, 1959.
This will be the 3rd European-level commemoration of this historic date in Tibet's history. Previous such commemorations were held in Brussels (1996) and in Geneva (1997).
Speakers this year include:
Mr. T.C. Tethong, Minister for International Affairs of the Tibetan Government in Exile
Mr. James Moorhouse, Member of European Parliament and Executive Co-President of the Intergroup on Tibet at the European Parliament
Mrs. Kunzang Yuthok, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Western Europe
Mr. Kunsang Chophel, President of the Tibetan Community in France
A special message from His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been received. Good will messages from politicians, organisations and other human rights causes expressing solidarity and support have been received.
Tibet supporters from the following countries will be in Paris for the commemoration:
Czech Republic, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, United Kingdom,
Luxembourg, Austria, Croatia, Norway, Holland, Slovenia, Hungary, Russia,
Slovenia, Republic of Buriaty,Sweden, etc...........
Program includes:
- A Wish Tree for Tibet : during the day, individual wishes for Tibet written on colorful paper flags will be tied to the branches
- In a mass action that aims at bringing March in the streets of Paris to the Chinese Embassy
- Colorful balloons calling for "Freedom for Tibet" in French
- Singing of the Tibetan National Anthem,
In France, as of this release, 202 Mayors have agreed to hoist the Tibetan National Flag on March 8, 1998. New names of cities arrive each hour.
This commemoration is organised by association Tibet which represents cultural, political, religious and humanitarian organisations in Europe that work on behalf of Tibet and the Tibetan Community in Europe.
