WASHINGTON, March 12 (AFP) - The US Senate overwhelmingly urged the Clinton administration Thursday to condemn Chinese rights abuses at the UN Commission on Human Rights, which opens its annual meeting next week.
By a vote of 95-5, Senators passed a nonbinding resolution urging the United States to again back a measure censuring Chinese abuses, even as senior US officials hinted the administration would do otherwise.
The resolution, which cites official abuses in China and Tibet, passed the Senate Foreign Relations committee 16-1 on Wednesday.
The UN Commission opens its meeting in Geneva on Monday.
