NEW DELHI, 6 Apr (AP)--Buddhist monks led 200 Tibetan protesters in a demonstration outside the United Nations office in New Delhi Monday to muster support for six activists who have not eaten for 27 days, seeking U.N. intervention in their Himalayan homeland.
Stepping up the campaign, the protesters said they would fast for 36 hours outside the U.N. office, when they would be replaced by another group to continue the strike.
Police took no immediate action to break up the unauthorized demonstration, but stood by with buses to haul away the protesters if ordered to do so.
In another part of the city, six activists led by 71-year-old Kun Sang entered the 27th day of their indefinite hunger strike. The strikers are living only on a glass of water each in the morning and evening.
They are demanding the United Nations discuss Chinese-controlled Tibet in
the General Assembly, appoint a special representative to investigate
alleged human rights violations, and name a special envoy on Tibet.
