TYC appeal for a 48 hour fax jam campaign on 20 April

World Tibet Network News Monday, April 20, 1998

We, the Tibetan Youth Congress, sent out an appeal this morning for a 48-hour fax-jam campaign directed against the UN Secretary General. The campaign should start tomorrow (5:00pm Indian Standard Time) to coincide with the completion of the sixth week of our Hunger Strike unto Death. This, we feel, will be a fitting response to the indifference of the UN.

The TYC and our hunger strikers are overwhelmed by the magnitude of the support we have been receiving from Tibetans and international friends of Tibet. Many of them have undertaken campaigns in support of our demands. We woould like to mention a few of them below.

The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of Kathmandu organized a prayer meeting and fast on 15 April. The prayer meeting was attended by some 3,000 people.

Melbourne University's Students for Free Tibet wrote to us on 16 April to say that they held a 24 hour fast on the steps of the Australian Parliament House.

Free Tibet Campaign in Madrid collected 200 signatures on a letter which they sent to the UN and the US President on 15 April.

Independent Tibet Network, London, joined the Tibetan community and Tibet suporters on 16 and 17 April in a 24 hour hunger strike outside the UN building in London.

Young Indians Campaign for a Free Tibet, baesed in Dehradun, offered to come to Delhi to fast in support of us.

Letters of support came from many Tibetan insitutes and organizations as well. We mention some of them in the following:

a) Employees of the Tibetan Government in Exile, Dharamsala,

b) Employees of the Norbulinka Insitute, Dharamsala,

c) Employees of the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, Dharamsala,

d) Tibetan sweater sellers in Ooty,

e) Tibetan Hotel and restaurant owners in Dharamsala,

f) School children of the Central School for Tibetans in Mussoorie,

g) School children of Namgyal Higher Secondary School in Kathmandu,

h) National Democratic Party of Tibet, Dharamsala,

j) Tibetan Youth Congress, Group No. 9 Mundgod, etc.

Besides, numerous individuals have written to us, informing us of what they are doing for the six hunger strikers. We thank you all for your support. The TYC and the six hunger strikers would like to tell all the Tibetans and supporters: "Please don't give up on Tibet and we too will not give up."

Tseten Norbu, President
