NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--April 21, 1998--Atlantic recording artist Scott weiland will be among the all-star line-up of musical performers slated to appear at the upcoming Save Tibet benefit and awareness-raising concert, to be held at Atlanta, Georgia's Chastain Park Amphitheatre on May 9.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama is scheduled to be in attendance at the festival event. The concert, sponsored by 99X-FM, coincides with the launch of Emory University's 1998 Summer Institute for Tibetan Buddhist Studies -- a joint effort between the university and the Loseling Institute, the North American branch of the Dalai Lama's monestery in exile. Proceeds from the event will go towards the preservation of Tibetan culture.
Weiland and his band, which features Daniel Lanois and members of Porno For Pyros and Samiam, will perform tracks from Scott's newly released Atlantic solo debut, ``12 BAR BLUES.'' Their appearance at the Save Tibet event kicks off an extensive itinerary of club shows and radio dates, marking Weiland's first solo tour. Scott and company made their first network television appearance on April 3, when they performed ``Barbarella'' on CBS-TV's Late Show With David Letterman.
``12 BAR BLUES,'' which earned a three-and-a-half-star review from David Fricke in Rolling Stone (April 2nd issue), was produced by Weiland and Blair Lamb, with additional production by Lanois. All twelve tracks were written or co-written by the Stone Temple Pilots frontman -- including the first single, ``Barbarella,'' and ``Lady, Your Roof Brings Me Down'' (also featured on Atlantic's RIAA gold
soundtrack album, ``GREAT EXPECTATIONS'').
The companion video for ``Barbarella,'' directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Smashing Pumpkins, ``1979'' and ``Tonight, Tonight''; Oasis, ``All Around The World''), is in Heavy rotation on MTV, Custom rotation on VH1, and Heavy rotation on The Box. The band recently performed ``Barbarella'' on VH1's Crossroads program. On MTV, Weiland recently performed on 120 Minutes and made appearances on both Artist Cut and, for a second time, MTV Live.
