BEIJING, May 5 (UPI) _ China has lashed out at Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes for saying Beijing is India's top threat.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao (``Joo Bong-zow'') decried the comment as ``ridiculous and not worthy of recognition.''
However, he went on to say China ``does not pose any threat to anyone'' and has always based bilateral ties on ``principles of peaceful coexistence.''
Zhu also said Fernandes' remarks have ``sabotaged the favorable atmosphere for improving bilateral ties.''
He added, ``We cannot but express our serious regret and resentment.''
Fernandes has come under fire at home and abroad for the comments, made during an interview with an Indian television station.
In addition to labeling China threat No. 1, Fernandes also accused Beijing of
targeting India with missiles located in Tibet and setting up a communications base on a Burmese island.
