The Dalai Lama help launch Human Rights campaign (AP)

World Tibet Network News Wednesday, May 13, 1998

ATLANTA, May 11 (AP) Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader gave his personal touch to a new campaign supporting defenders of human rights. Wearing his saffron- and wine-colored robe Monday, the Dalai Lama put his thumbprint and signature to a mural that will include the fingerprints of 12 jailed human rights activists.

His 10-minute speech, which he gave in both Tibetan and English, marked the beginning of the "Make Your Mark'' campaign by Amnesty International and The Body Shop.

The Dalai Lama praised the efforts of groups striving to improve human rights. "I join with you to remember those individuals who have sacrificed their whole lives for the benefit of others,'' he said.

The campaign is part of Amnesty International's yearlong effort to mark the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
