Gang Starr's GURU to Perform with the Headhunters, Featuring the Legendary Herbie Hancock, at Tibetan Freedom Concert June 13

LOS ANGELES, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Showing his support for the people of Tibet, Gang Starr's GURU will perform at the June 13 Tibetan Freedom Concert. GURU will join The Headhunters, featuring jazz titan Herbie Hancock, onstage at the first of two massive concerts to be held in Washington, DC's RFK Stadium. The special show reunites The Headhunters and Hancock for their first joint concert appearance in 25 years.

Scheduled for June 13 and 14, the Tibetan Freedom Concert is the third in a series of concerts benefiting the Tibetan cause: raising both public awareness and funds, the Tibetan Freedom Concerts are part of a worldwide nonviolent protest campaign dedicated to ending the occupation of Tibet by the Republic of China. Since the inaugural 1996 show, the Freedom Concerts have raised over $1.25 million from a collective audience of 150,000.

Reflecting broad ranging global support for the Tibetan people, the Tibetan Freedom Concerts have featured an enormously varied cast of musical participants. The upcoming concerts will include such acclaimed acts as Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Radiohead, Beck, Patti Smith, Beastie Boys, The Wallflowers, The Verve, Tracy Chapman, and A Tribe Called Quest.

The upcoming concerts (which sold out less than six hours after tickets went on sale) are aimed to coincide with the June 15 ``National Day Of Action For Tibet'' in Washington, DC. Featuring a noon rally on the Capitol lawn, the event will give protesters a special opportunity to push for negotiations between the Chinese government and the Tibetan people, as it comes just prior to President Clinton's trip to China.

GURU's participation in the concert comes as he and his Gang Starr partner DJ Premier are enjoying huge critical and commercial success with their new Moment Of Truth album, the duo's Noo Trybe / Virgin Records Urban debut and fifth album overall. Certified gold, the album documents the hard-hitting personal and political insights which have distinguished Gang Starr as a leader in hip hop music for over a decade.
