[CND, 06/17/98] The Beijing High Court ruled on Tuesday against the giant US-based pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly in a case involving its trademark anti-depressant Prozac. The company filed a lawsuit after the drug was imitated on the mainland market, leading to loss in sales. Shocked by the ruling, Eli Lilly commented that the decision would discourage foreign investors in China, AFP reported. "This kind of attitude doesn't encourage foreign investors to bring in proprietary material and new technology," Margaret Shu, a spokeswoman for the company, said. Eli Lilly is likely to file an appeal, which would be handled by
China's Supreme Court. Shu also hoped that the issue would be raised in the upcoming summit between Chinese President JIANG Zeming and US President Bill Clinton. (Jim YU, YIN De An)
