CLINTON IN BEIJING

A TIBET MILITANT SETS HIMSELF ON FIRE IN FRANCE

We wound up this issue of " China-Tibet Fax " before the visit of President Clinton to Beijing had been concluded. This visit followed that of another president : Oscar Luigi Scalfaro of Italy. We shall comment and analyse these two important state visits at a very delicate time for the struggle for democracy in China and freedom in Tibet, in the next edition of our bulletin.

On the other hand, we considered it important to focus our attention to a second suicide, this time in French, at the gates of Paris, where Gilles Blanchard set himself on fire to protest for freedom in Tibet. An incident which brought immediately to mind the horror of the monk Thupten Ngodup, who set himself ablaze in New Delhi.

Such acts startle and are indicative of a state of tension and anxiety in the archipelago of supporters of freedom for Tibet. From these events, and the open letter of the Radical Party to Kashag, and the subsequent reply of Kalon T.C. Tethong, Piero Verni felt the need to write an article for "China-Tibet Fax" which we publish under the heading "Page Two."

Still on this tragedy, the representative of the Dalai Lama in Paris, Kunzang D. Yuthok, in a press release issued the day after, reaffirmed that "His Holiness" the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile disapprove of any recourse to violence."

The collection of funds, to prevent the closing of Radio Voice of Tibet is continuing.

Good reading to you all.
